speak happy, hear happy

My kids are learning new songs at school to sing in their Christmas programs and a list of each carol with lyrics was sent home so we could help them practice. While we were working on “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” the other day, I noticed Mareto was switching the words at the end of the song. His sweet little voice sings out as loud as he can, “we wish you a Merry Christmas, and HAPPY YOU HEAR!” I tried to correct him, but he insists on singing it this way.

This morning I was dressing the kids for school and Mareto was singing to himself. I smiled as I heard, “and happy you hear!!” and then it hit me. His version is amazing. He had it right all along! What on earth could be better this Christmas, and into the New Year, than to hear lots and lots of happy?! With everything going on in the world right now, isn’t that what we need? Don’t we all need an extra dose of joy, kindness, compassion, and grace?

I want all of us to hear more happy this year. But as I was thinking about how that could be possible I realized that, like always, it starts with us. It starts with one. In order to hear more happy we have to SPEAK more happy. We have to be the ones to step out and offer kindness to a stranger.Β We can pay for the young family’s meal at a restaurant. We can leave some cookies and an encouraging note on the porch of someone we don’t (or do!) know. We can give more hugs and smiles than frowns and stares. We can, oh I don’t know, give a beautiful bouquet of flowers to the tired mom in the parking lot.

One step, one act, one voice at a time we can be part of making this world a more beautiful place. You can brighten someone’s day and impact their life in just a moment. Everyone has more to their story than what we see on the outside, and while it might seem silly at first to go out of your way to show love to a stranger, you have no idea what effect it might have on their life. It might seem like just a drop in the bucket, but here’s the amazing thing about drops: they cause a ripple effect. What if you caused the ripple effect of love, joy, and compassion this year? What if your one act went on to bring more happy to countless lives?

Let’s start speaking more happy so we can all hear a little more happy. Isn’t it just like a child to remind us of the important things? If you choose to take that first step to show an act of love to someone I’d love to hear about it! Leave me a comment below! And if someone does something kind for you, share that so we can hear the happy!
